Keeping Home in the City

Striving to keep a sustainable, healthy and resourceful home in NYC.

Sewing, Gardening, Cooking, Cleaning & Crafting

I’m a New Yorker. I love being out in the city, immersed in the hustle and bustle of daily life. But I long to retreat to a well kept, peaceful, and comfortable home.

This is how I keep my one bedroom home in NYC.

Family Dinner

Family dinner is a weekly event (usually on Sunday nights) - sometimes involving family, sometimes with friends.  It’s our goal to continue the family tradition.

This week we had family dinner with eight people around our expanded dining room table, with chairs borrowed from the neighbors (there’s no place to store a set of eight dining chairs in a NYC apartment).  This might have been our largest gathering to date (excluding holidays).  So we had a big meal to celebrate!

Our menu included local Brooklyn fare from our favorite places to shop in the neighborhood:

Appetizers:

Olives (from Sahadis)

Fresh ricotta (from Stinky Bklyn), Vermont honey, pistachio dust on ciabatta (bread from Caputo’s Bakery)… recipe ala 61 Local

Dinner:

Herb-Crusted Roast Beef (from Paisanos Meat Market), twice baked potatoes, spinach salad.

Dessert:

Assorted selection from Monteleone Bakery
